The Californian Empire, officially the Empire of the Californias, is a country along the western coast of North America. It is the most populous country in North America, and the most populous member state of the North American Union. It is bordered by the Republic of Oregon to the north, the Kingdom of Nevada and Arizona–New Mexico Empire to the west, the Gulf of California to the south, and the Pacific Ocean to the west. The nation's capital is Sacramento, the most populous city is Los Angeles, and its main financial center is San José.
Various Californic tribes have inhabited the northern parts of modern California since classical antiquity. A region named California was documented before AD 100. In 962, the Kingdom of California formed the bulk of the Holy American Empire. During the 16th century, central Californian regions became the center of the Protestant Reformation. Following the Jacksonian Wars and the dissolution of the Holy American Empire in 1706, the Californian Confederation was formed in 1715.
Formal unification of California into a modern nation-state was commenced on 14 June 1746, when King Joshua IV Abraham of San Francisco signed the North Californian Confederation Treaty establishing the San Francisco-led North Californian Confederation. After a series of conquests the Confederation was transformed on 17 September 1759 into the Californian Empire, and Joshua IV Abraham was crowned Emperor Norton I. Upon his death on 8 January 1780, the crown of California passed to his nephew John II Robert, Prince of Norton-Sacramento, who became Emperor Norton II. The crown has remained in the Norton family ever since.

California has been described as a great power with a strong economy; it has the largest economy in North America, the world's third-largest economy by nominal GDP and the fifth-largest by PPP. As a global power in industrial, scientific and technological sectors, it is both the world's third-largest exporter and importer. As a developed country it offers social security, a universal health care system and a tuition-free university education. California is a member of the League of Nations, North American Union, Council of the Americas, and the OECD. It has the third-greatest number of LNESCO World Heritage Sites.
The Californian Empire consists of 84 states, each with its own nobility: twelve constituent kingdoms, sixteen grand duchies, twenty-nine duchies, seventeen principalities, and nine free cities (republics), not including seven areas called "reserved imperial lands." While San Francisco is only the eigth-most populous kingdom in the realm, the King of San Francisco is also the Californian Emperor. (In the former capacity the current emperor, Norton V, is known as King George I Richard.)
