The American Third Republic
UNDER CONSTRUCTION
On January 6, 2021, the American experiment in self-government nearly met a very violent end. Paramilitary forces loyal to outgoing president Donald J. Trump attacked a joint session of Congress that had met to certify the 2020 victory of former vice president Joe Biden. Though they killed the president- and vice president-elect, and burned the Capitol to the ground, Trump's coup ultimately failed.
However, the old order was mortally wounded. With the failures of the Constitution of 1789 laid bare, a new constitution was written, removing some of the presidency's power and providing for a multi-party system.
The first republic, the Articles of Confederation, lasted only eight years. The second republic lasted centuries. How long will the third republic last?
This project began as a series of posts on the subreddit Imaginary Elections. In January and February 2024, I did a dozen posts involving a series of events between 2021 and 2031 before I ran out of steam. This section of my website will be a backup of those posts alongside more details about those elections.
